As a designer, I love connecting with others in the industry to delve into their creative process and discover where they find inspiration for their unique designs.

I'm excited to introduce a friend who's launched a new brand blending minimalistic designs with its own unique charm: Lolita Garcia Textiles.

Lolita is a talented Latina textile designer known for her minimalistic yet vibrant creations that breathe life into any space.

I recently caught up with her to uncover the inspiration behind her creation of her unique pieces.

What inspired you to start your business in this particular niche?

LG:

My favorite part of the design process is always selecting textiles. For me, it was a no-brainer. I was always intrigued by the texture, design, and how to apply it.

AR:

Describe your printed textiles collection. What makes it unique and distinct from other options in the market? How do you infuse your cultural heritage and personal story into your textile designs?

LG:

My collection was inspired by beaches from my travels globally. The color palette is nature-inspired because nature never gets it wrong. I have noticed there are a lot of beautiful traditional and colorful patterns in the market, however, I'm more of a modern, minimalist, with a neutral palette and some pops of color. It definitely reflects in my work! Lastly, I was inspired by my mother's family, generations of entrepreneurs in both Mexico and the United States.

AR:

Walk us through your design process from concept to the final printed textile. What are the key steps involve? How do you select colors, patterns, and motifs that resonate with your target audience?

LG:

I usually begin with a mood board filled with a variety of images from my travels, favorite architecture, and color ways, that reflect the inspiration I'm working with.  After many drawings, I scanned these on the computer and began working with them in minimal modern patterns.  Thus, I always reach out to colleagues for their professional opinions before finalizing the collection.

AR:

How does your Latino heritage influence your design choices and overall business ethos? Are there any traditional elements or symbols from your culture that you incorporate into your textiles?

LG:

Well, my line is self-titled! I decided to use my name because of its uniqueness. I didn't grow up in a typical Latina home with bright colors and a maximalist feel. I grew up in a home with a minimal feel with a neutral palette. Which inspires my love of simple, minimal, modern, and neutral colors.

AR:

Do you follow sustainable and ethical practices in the production of your printed textiles? If yes, how do you ensure this commitments? How important is environmental consciousness in your business values?

LG:

We print our fabrics by hand in California in small batches on 100% Belgian linen on water-based, non-solvent inks and digitally print by the yard using pigment dyes in Vermont on 100% Irish linen. Linen is one of the most sustainable raw materials in the world.

AR:

Have you collaborated with other artists or designers to create unique textile collections? If yes, tell us about your experience. Are there any partnerships with artisans or communities that you work with to create your textiles?

LG:

No collaborations as of yet. Most of my patterns are screen-printed by a local printer. I like the idea of supporting local businesses.

AR:

What are some current design trends that have influenced your recent textile creations? Where do you draw inspiration for your designs? Are there specific places, experiences, or people that inspire you?

LG:

Color and I, like that more designers are hand-drawing their patterns. I'm also inspired by geometric design styles like Art Deco and my travels globally.

AR:

How do you ensure a seamless and enjoyable customer experience for those purchasing your printed textiles? Do you offer customization options to meet the specific needs of your clients?

LG:

I don't offer customization options, however, I curated this collection in a color way that will work with a variety of home decor.

AR:

What are your future aspirations for your textile business? Any upcoming collections or projects you're excited about? How do you envision your brand evolving over time?

LG:

I have new color ways for patterns, Deco and Pebble Stripe that will probably be released next year. I'm in the beginning stages of adding a wallpaper line which I'm excited about. I just signed up with a new foreign showroom, and I would like to continue to expand throughout the United States.

AR:

What advice would you give to other Latina entrepreneurs looking to start their journey in the textile industry? How do you stay motivated and inspired as a business owner?

LG:

Just do it! You have your ups and downs as a business owner, but it's well worth it. It's about continuity and setting goals. I will suggest obtaining as much education on textiles and continuing learning!
